-- Password validation error while attempting to install ReliableDR.

SUMMARY

Error installing ReliableDR and domain password policies

ISSUE

Problem:

During installation of ReliableDR you receive a SQL error indicating that a password validation failed.

Cause:

During installation, ReliableDR installs a SQL Express database instance and creates a ReliableDR user with a predefined password. The length of this password is 10 characters in ReliableDR 3.x and 12 characters in ReliableDR 4.x.

If the ReliableDR Windows server is joined to a domain that enforces a password policy length longer than that of the predefined password, you receive the above error during installation.

Resolution:

  1. Uninstall ReliableDR and SQL Server Express using the Windows Control Panel.
  2. Delete any remaining SQL RDR databas items by removing this folder: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.SQLRDR
  3. Change the Windows password policy length enforcement rule in the domain, or remove the server from the domain during installation and verify its password requirements.

You can review server policy following this tutorial: http://www.wikihow.com/Disable-Windows-Server-2008-Password-Complexity-Requirement
  4. Install ReliableDR again.
