Storage for UEB appliances deployed with Unitrends version 8.1 or higher

ISSUE

Purpose

This article explains storage for UEB appliances deployed with version 8.1 or higher.

Description

With UEB appliances deployed with version 8.1 or higher, an initial disk of approximately 90GB is used to deploy the UEB virtual machine. You must also add a minimum of 140GB as the initial backup storage. Deployment cannot be completed without adding the initial backup storage because it houses the appliance’s unique data as well as backups. Storing the appliance’s unique data externally enables you to reattach the original UEB’s initial backup storage to a new UEB VM and recover your appliance and backups if necessary.

Deployment Types

Because you can now reattach existing storage and use it to recover a UEB appliance as well as backups, you have two options when deploying a new UEB appliance:

  • This is a new Unitrends Enterprise Backup appliance deployment (most common).

Select this option if you are deploying a new UEB appliance and intend to use new backup storage.

Note: This option should also be selected if you are performing disaster recovery (DR) using replicated or archived backups.

  • I am using this appliance to recover existing backup data.

Select this option if you are deploying a new UEB appliance and intend to attach existing backup storage from an original UEB appliance deployed with version 8.1 or higher. If you select this option, make sure to attach the original UEB's initial backup storage and all additional backup storage added to the UEB.  This includes disks used to expand storage and disks and external storage added to create seperate storage areas.  It is not possible to recover existing backup data after setting up the UEB.

Note: This option cannot be used for storage originally attached to a UEB appliance deployed with an earlier version. Only UEB appliances deployed with version 8.1 or higher can be recovered in this manner.

Storage types

We recommend deciding on a storage strategy prior to deploying your UEB appliance, and adding all subsequent backup storage in the same manner as the initial backup storage. You have three options:

  • Added Disk: In the UI, the storage type added disk refers to virtual disks created on direct attached storage (DAS, internal to the host) or on an external SAN or NAS storage array connected to the host.
  • iSCSI: In the UI, the storage type iSCSI refers to a SAN LUN connected directly to the UEB appliance via the iSCSI protocol.
  • NAS: In the UI, the storage type NAS refers to a NAS share connected to the UEB appliance via the CIFS or NFS protocol.
